A Brief History of Ranger Rick and the Lost Guides

By Scott Dadson

Ranger Rick and the Lost Guides started from the remnants of a talent show
band in 1986. Jerry (drummer of Urban Edge), Lawrence Winn on Guitar (who
would go on to form Fear and Loathing), Scott Dadson (vocals and guitar),
and Dave Etheridge on Bass (substituting at the last minute) played a talent
night at the Pub. Scotts original tune "Biting my nails over nothing" was
played with a searing (and might I add very, very original and cool) guitar
lead by Lawrence that night and then it was over.

Next semester, Dave Etheridge and Will Begg (drummer, who played in Right of
Way with Lawrence Winn and Jeff Umbarger) worked on this and other originals
as well as other cover material (most of it from old rockabilly and 60's
garage band files); Ranger Rick began to play the local circuit. The band
played off the mountain in north and South Carolina in the "bar" circuit
opening for acts such as Terrence Simien and the Mallet Playboys (zydeco).
The Band had two lead guitar players in its history, Mark Giltner and Steve
King (the Othermothers and Outer Limits).

Ranger Rick Disbanded in the summer of 1988. Dave and Will went on to form
Alistar Tale" with Eric Bachman prior to his transfer to UNC Chapel Hill and
"Archers of Loaf" fame. Scott Dadson and Jamie Mclendon (Dom Casual) formed
the Dead Wives of Jerry Lee Lewis in 1988. In 1989, Scott sold his guitars
(a 1967 Rickenbacher and a 1962 Gretsch) to Jamie and went down the
mountain. Scott, Dave, and Will reunited in 1995 to the pure chagrin of
their spouses who encouraged them to "record that stuff so that they
wouldn't have to hear them playing it live again." So they did."
